Heaven Pt. 5

“And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.” Ge. 1:14,15 KJV

In my morning devotion I often prayer a meditational prayer a portion of which goes like this: “Thank You Lord for eternal life; Thank You that my name is written in ‘The Lamb’s Book of Life’; And thank You for a home in Heaven where I will live with you forever.”

As I reflect on that last part, I realize that it is not really accurate. While I certainly will reside at some point in Heaven, according to the Bible, Heaven is not my eternal home. But that’s a debate for another blog.

Heaven is not so much a destination I’m shooting for as a symbol that stands for my reward as a believer. Don’t get me wrong I believe I am going to Heaven. I believe Heaven is a real place. But the importance of Heaven for me is not really in the getting there but in receiving all the bounty it encompasses.

For instance in our verse today God said “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night”.

I know this  refers to the creation of the sun, moon, and stars but as I meditate on the Word I can’t help reminding myself that one of Heaven’s gifts is light: Physical light,  emotional light..and spiritual light. Because the promise of Heaven is mine I no longer walk in darkness! As the Scripture says:

“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.” Eph. 5:8 NIV

Oh, how I need the light of Jesus…the light of Heaven in my life, to divide me from darkness of this world.

Let’s explore this together over the next few days. How has Heaven’s light, Jesus, brought you out of darkness?

  1. Pastor J, before knowing Jesus I would like to sit in the darkness, literally. Now, I really love light! I like the rooms well lit and with it being Christmas, that is one of my favorite ways to decorate . . .with lights. God bless you!

    • Amazing how things change when we receive Him isn’t it? I am always amazed by what parts of our lives He transforms even down to our preferences for light and dark! Praise God for what He has done in your life!

  2. Having Jesus in my heart has given me such hope. I no longer have to sit in darkness (depression/despair) over my circumstances anymore. His Light has certainly brought me out of that darkness and with His light shining so bright things don’t look so glim. I praise God, I am in a church family that His Light shines in so many. Thank you God, because when my light becomes dim my brothers and sisters turn up the brightness with their prayers and encouragement. God bless you, Pastor J, this series is great.
