“And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.” Ge. 1:14,15 KJV
In my morning devotion I often prayer a meditational prayer a portion of which goes like this: “Thank You Lord for eternal life; Thank You that my name is written in ‘The Lamb’s Book of Life’; And thank You for a home in Heaven where I will live with you forever.”
As I reflect on that last part, I realize that it is not really accurate. While I certainly will reside at some point in Heaven, according to the Bible, Heaven is not my eternal home. But that’s a debate for another blog.
Heaven is not so much a destination I’m shooting for as a symbol that stands for my reward as a believer. Don’t get me wrong I believe I am going to Heaven. I believe Heaven is a real place. But the importance of Heaven for me is not really in the getting there but in receiving all the bounty it encompasses.
For instance in our verse today God said “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night”.
I know this refers to the creation of the sun, moon, and stars but as I meditate on the Word I can’t help reminding myself that one of Heaven’s gifts is light: Physical light, emotional light..and spiritual light. Because the promise of Heaven is mine I no longer walk in darkness! As the Scripture says:
“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.” Eph. 5:8 NIV
Oh, how I need the light of Jesus…the light of Heaven in my life, to divide me from darkness of this world.
Let’s explore this together over the next few days. How has Heaven’s light, Jesus, brought you out of darkness?
