Get Up and Glow Pt. 12

We have been talking about glowing or making our lives shine for Jesus. Christian, once you decide to get up and glow for Jesus you will find that…

Glowing is not only necessary and possible, it is powerful!-

It is when God’s people take steps of faith  that God meets them with miracles!

During the Mau Mau uprising in Kenya in 1960, missionaries Matt and Lora Higgens were returning one night to Nairobi through the heart of Mau Mau territory, where Kenyans and missionaries alike had been killed and dismembered. Seventeen miles outside of Nairobi their Land Rover stopped. Higgens tried to repair the car in the dark, but could not restart it. They spent the night in the car, but claimed Psalm 4:8: “I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.” In the morning they were able to repair the car.

A few weeks later the Higgenses returned to America on furlough. They reported that the night before they left Nairobi, a local pastor had visited them. He told how a member of the Mau Mau had confessed that he and three others had crept up to the car to kill the Higgenses, but when they saw the sixteen men surrounding the car, the Mau Mau left in fear.

“Sixteen men?” Higgens responded. “I don’t know what you mean!”

While they were on furlough, a friend Clay Brent asked the Higgenses if they have been in any danger recently. Higgens asked, “Why?”

Then Clay said that on March 23, God had placed a heavy prayer burden on his heart. He called the men of the church, and sixteen of them met together and prayed until the burden lifted. Did God send sixteen angels to represent those men and enforce their prayers? (excerpt from Touch the World Through Prayer)

Paul the Apostle was a man who had it all. Political power, education, respect of his peers. His life was on the fast track to success and then He met Jesus on the road to Damascus. Years later he wrote these words:

“though I myself have reasons for such confidence.

If someone else thinks they have reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee; as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for righteousness based on the law, faultless.

But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ” Phil. 3:4-8 NIV

Christian,  there is a cost but shining For Jesus is necessary. It is possible. It is powerful. Getting up for Jesus is necessary. It is possible. It is powerful! We must to decide to do it. It is time to give it all for Jesus.

Let’s pray: God I know you are a God of good news who will give me everything if I give You everything.  Its time for me to get up and glow. It’s time for me to trade O.K. news for good news! So today I do that. God I allow You to come in and heal me so that I may at last rise up in every area of my life and move on. I allow You to shine Your light into the dark areas of my life so that I in turn might shine for You to lead others into Your healing presence. It’s time to get up and glow! In Jesus name A-men!

Get Up and Glow Pt. 11

We have been talking about shining our light for Jesus. We must be lights in this dark world! When so many are saying, “The darkness is becoming too powerful!”…I am standing up to say,”Glowing for Jesus, shining for Jesus is possible!

It is possible because God has given to the church the supernatural baptism of the Holy Spirit

To his disciples Jesus said…

“Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before. John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit….But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:4,5,8

Church, if we want to have the power God intended us to have then we need this baptism. If the Apostles Peter and Paul needed it then we need it too!

So what is the baptism in the Holy Spirit?-

“The baptism in the Holy Spirit  was the normal experience of all in the early Christian church. With it comes the enduement of power for life and service, the bestowment of the gifts and their uses in the work of the ministry (Luke 24:49; Acts 1:4,8; 1 Corinthians 12:1-31). This experience is distinct from and subsequent to the experience of the new birth (Acts 8:12-17; 10:44-46; 11:14-16; 15:7-9). With the baptism in the Holy Spirit come such experiences as an overflowing fullness of the Spirit (John 7:37-39; Acts 4:8), a deepened reverence for God (Acts 2:43; Hebrews 12:28), an intensified consecration to God and dedication to His work (Acts 2:42), and a more active love for Christ, for His Word, and for the lost (Mark 16:20).The baptism of believers in the Holy Spirit is witnessed by the initial physical sign of speaking with other tongues as the Spirit of God gives them utterance (Acts 2)” The General Council of the Assemblies of God Statement of Fundamental Truths

Here is a  testimony from one who attended the Pentecostal revival at Azusa Street:

“While seeking for the Baptism with the Holy Ghost in Los Angeles, after Sister Ferrell laid hands on me I praised and praised God and saw my Savior in the heavens. And as I praised, I came closer and closer and I was so small. By and by I swept into the wound in His side, and He was not only in me but I in Him, and there I found that rest that passeth all understanding, and He said to me, you are in the bosom of the Father. He said I was clothed upon and in the secret place of the Most High. But I said, Father, I want the gift of the Holy Ghost, and the heavens opened and I was overshadowed, and such power came upon me and went through me. He said, Praise Me, and when I did, angels came and ministered unto me. I was passive in His hands working on my vocal cords, and I realized they were loosing me. I began to praise Him in an unknown language.Lucy Leatherman

If ever the church needed the fires of Pentecost it is now!

Get Up and Glow Pt. 10

We have been speaking in these last posts about the need to get up and move on. The church of today has been commanded to “Get Up!”  or “Arise”….

But we are not commanded just to Get up. We are commanded to glow with the power of Jesus! The time has come to shine our light church!

Glowing is necessary

Jesus said“You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” MAtthew 5:14-16 NLT

I have heard it said, “How we behave today no longer has a bearing on our Christianity because we are not under law but under grace. ”

Some people say “Sinning or not sinning doesn’t matter anymore because behavior doesn’t determine eternal destination.”

That is an entirely self focused view!  The mindset behind it says ” the only reason I am a Christian is so that I can go to Heaven and be happy with Jesus all by my onesys.”

I want to confirm good works cannot save you today only Jesus can do that. But I also want to confirm our good works can be the light that points someone else to Jesus and rescues them from Hell. And our evil works can be a darkness that blinds someone else so that they never receive Jesus. I am convinced that some of us will get to Heaven and Jesus will say “Oh my child it is wonderful to have you here but where is your sister, your brother, your mother, your father? You were supposed to bring them with you.”

Good works are necessary because by them you shine in a dark world and light the way for others.Right after Jesus told his followers to shine their lights He said these words.

“Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not even the smallest detail of God’s law will disappear until its purpose is achieved. So if you ignore the least commandment and teach others to do the same, you will be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. But anyone who obeys God’s laws and teaches them will be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven.” Ma 5:17-19 NLT

Jesus didn’t say your evil deeds would hold you out of Heaven. He said they would cause you to lose reward in Heaven because they have the power to destroy your witness for the kingdom!

Church the time has come to shine for Jesus more than we ever have before? If the world is growing darker, then we must grow brighter!

Get Up and Glow Pt. 9

We have been talking about getting up and moving on in life. We have said that getting up is necessary and that it is possible because God’s Holy Spirit and His Word guide us and bless us. Yesterday we said that all the promises in the Bible are ours to claim…

But we can only claim them if we get up and start pursuing the promises. Today I want to state that because of His promises…

 Getting up is powerful!

Faith honors God and God honors faith! A story from the life of missionaries Robert and Mary Moffat illustrates this truth. For 10 years this couple labored faithfully in Bechuanaland (now called Botswana) without one ray of encouragement to brighten their way. They could not report a single convert. Finally the directors of their mission board began to question the wisdom of continuing the work. The thought of leaving their post, however, brought great grief to this devoted couple, for they felt sure that God was in their labors, and that they would see people turn to Christ in due season. They stayed; and for a year or two longer, darkness reigned. Then one day a friend in England sent word to the Moffats that she wanted to mail them a gift and asked what they would like. Trusting that in time the Lord would bless their work, Mrs. Moffat replied, “Send us a communion set; I am sure it will soon be needed.” God honored that dear woman’s faith. The Holy Spirit moved upon the hearts of the villagers, and soon a little group of six converts was united to form the first Christian church in that land. The communion set from England was delayed in the mail; but on the very day before the first commemoration of the Lord’s super in Bechuanaland, the set arrived.” (taken from sermon, author unknown)

During the terrible days of the Blitz, a father, holding his small son by the hand, ran from a building that had been struck by a bomb. In the front yard was a shell hole. Seeking shelter as quickly as possible, the father jumped into the hole and held up his arms for his son to follow. Terrified, yet hearing his father’s voice telling him to jump, the boy replied, “I can’t see you!”

The father, looking up against the sky tinted red by the burning buildings, called to the silhouette of his son, “But I can see you. Jump!” The boy jumped, because he trusted his father. The Christian faith enables us to face life or meet death, not because we can see, but with the certainty that we are seen; not that we know all the answers, but that we are known. ( taken from sermon,  Donner Atwood)

There is power in the name of Jesus to break every chain! We just have to persevere until the answer comes!

Get Up and Glow Pt. 8

We have been talking about getting up and moving on in our lives in the midst of trials. In the last post we spoke about how getting up is possible because of the power of the Holy Spirit in us. But there is a second reason getting up is possible…

Getting up is possible because we have the promises of the Bible to guide us!

“Russell Kelso Carter (1849-1928) was a star athlete of a military academy and an excellent student academically, who went on to be a successful teacher and coach. He then spent several years as an ordained Methodist minister, after which he went to medical school. He spent the last of his professional years as a doctor of medicine. Carter was also a musician and songwriter. …

Although Carter was a professed Christian most of his life, it wasn’t until a crisis with his natural heart that he began to understand the reality and power of Bible promises. At age 30, his health was in critical condition and the physicians could do no more for him. Carter turned to God for help and healing.

He knelt and made a promise that healing or no, his life was finally and forever, fully consecrated to the service of the Lord. It was from that moment that the written Word of God became alive to Carter. He began to stand upon the promises of healing, determining to believe no matter what his physical condition, no matter how he felt. Over the course of the next several months his strength returned, and his heart was completely healed! Carter lived another healthy 49 years.

The hymn Carter had written several years before his healing miracle became more than words and music to him. Standing on the Promises became an integral part of his life.

Standing On the Promises

Standing on the promises of Christ my King,
Through eternal ages let His praises ring,
Glory in the highest, I will shout and sing,
Standing on the promises of God.
Standing on the promises that cannot fail,
When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail,
By the living Word of God I shall prevail,
Standing on the promises of God.”  (the Story Behind the Song  by Connie Ruth Christiansen)

All the promises of the Bible are yours if you will only get up and line yourself up with them.

What Bible promise are you standing on right now?

Get Up and Glow Pt. 7

In yesterday’s post it was mentioned that getting up and getting on with life is necessary…

But not only is getting up necessary getting up is possible!

The word of God says in Isaiah 59- “My Spirit will not leave them, and neither will these words I have given you. They will be on your lips and on the lips of your children and your children’s children forever. I, the LORD, have spoken!”

I recently had lunch with two Bible translators from Papua New Guinea. It turns out when they were newly married they lived in the town next to me. One of the missionaries worked in a local factory. They lived in an apartment fifteen minutes from my home. These missionaries are  just regular folk like you and  me. Yet God has called them to this incredible work half way across the world. In their time as missionaries these “regular folk” have faced thievery, life threatening sicknesses and near fatal accidents. Their computer system with the translation on it and their back-ups have crashed because of computer viruses causing them to almost lose the translation. They have been threatened and even carjacked at gun point. The place they live is so violent that just a few months ago one of the missionaries was in her bedroom reading when she heard gun shots out in the street. Her first reaction was not to duck and cover. Instead she calmly stayed on the bed and made a mental note to remind their 18-year-old to be careful when he went to the store because “there are people shooting today.”

How does this couple keep getting up day after day to pursue the things of God? They do it by the power of the Spirit. They have recognized that giving up is not an option… that getting up is necessary. They have also realized that with the power of the Holy Spirit getting up is possible.

The Holy Spirit is a well of limitless power. No force in the universe can stand against Him: By the Holy Spirit the waters of the red Sea parted! By the power of the Holy Spirit demons bowed before Jesus! By the power of the Holy Spirit Corrie Tenboom prayed over a bottle of vitamin C drops in Ravensbruck concentration camp. The bottle never went dry for a full year! By the power of the Holy Spirit Elizabeth Elliot and her friends marched  into the jungle to evangelize the tribe who had murdered their husbands. The  tribe was converted to Christianity! The list goes on. By the power of the Holy Spirit you can get up!

What are you believing the Holy Spirit to do in your life? Arise Christian!

Get Up and Glow Pt. 6

In yesterday’s post it was mentioned that in order to release our problems successfully into the hands of Jesus it is necessary to get up from where we are stuck and begin to move on in the power of Jesus. Here is why…   It is true dear Reader that Psalm 23 says

“The Lord is my shepherd I shall not want.” Psalm 23:1 Please notice It does not say I do not want. It says I shall not want future tense…Why? Because God is goingto

The Lower Falls, Doanes Royalston MA

provide our every need. He is going to lead us into green pasture, beside still waters and He is going to restore our souls. But in order to do that He first has to lead us through the Valley of the Shadow of Death.

Do you know the Valley of the Shadow of Death is a real place? You can Google it. It is a narrow chasm between Bethlehem and Jerusalem. On one side is the town of Bethlehem and on the other side are the best sheep fields in the area. The only way to the green pastures is through the valley. So shepherds take their flocks through the on a regular basis to the place where the sheep can get food to eat.

You have been wondering why you are going through your Valley of the Shadow of Death haven’t you? It’s because the valley is the only pathway to blessing. You may not like it but if you lay down in the Valley of the Shadow of death, if you get stuck there you are going to die there. Getting up and moving on to what’s next is necessary!

Don’t be afraid. Your Shepherd is with You. He will help you get up! Just decide to do it! Because getting up and moving on is necessary…and tomorrow we will discover it is possible!

Get Up and Glow Pt. 5

What follows is a brief excerpt from Pastor Wrinkle’s latest sermon…

Reader, I have got good news for you! We can stop worrying about our problem. God has arranged it so we can give them to Jesus by prayer. Once we have done that our problems are no longer our problems. They become Jesus’ problems. By this we are given the grace to move on!

Even as our problems become Jesus’ problems though  there are still  two things we must do to find freedom. We must get up and we must glow!

The Scripture in Isaiah says “Arise, Jerusalem! Let your light shine for all to see. For the glory of the LORD rises to shine on you. Darkness as black as night covers all the nations of the earth, but the glory of the LORD rises and appears over you.” Isaiah 60:1,2 NLT

I love the Hebrew word for arise here: quwm-  to rise, arise, stand, rise up, stand up

a) (Qal)

1) to arise

2) to arise (hostile sense)

3) to arise, become powerful

4) to arise, come on the scene

5) to stand

a) to maintain oneself

b) to be established, be confirmed

c) to stand, endure

d) to be fixed

e) to be valid

f) to be proven

g) to be fulfilled

h) to persist

i) to be set, be fixed

You do realize don’t you that the world is constantly trying to take our power. But the truth is we don’t have to let it! When the world knocks us down we can get back up.  We certainly can’t control what other people or circumstances do to us but we can control how we respond. We can choose to shrivel up and die or we can get up and live!

Which option are you choosing today? How can I pray for you?

Get Up and Glow Pt. 4

“The LORD looked and was displeased to find there was no justice. He was amazed to see that no one intervened to help the oppressed. So he himself stepped in to save them with his strong arm, and his justice sustained him…. In the west, people will respect the name of the LORD; in the east, they will glorify him. For he will come like a raging flood tide driven by the breath of the LORD. “The Redeemer will come to Jerusalem to buy back those in Israel who have turned from their sins,” Isa. 59:15,16,19,20 NLT

I have good news for you today!  Your redeemer has come and He is with you today! His name is Jesus. He can help you through your situation. I’ve got good news for you! You can’t fix your problem. But if you will stop trying and start daily turning to Jesus He will fix it for you! The Bible calls him the redeemer, The Kinsman redeemer, the Ga’al. Do  you know what a redeemer is? Listen to this:

The Boy Who Lost His Boat

Tom carried his new boat to the edge of the river. He carefully placed it in the water and slowly let out the string. How smoothly the boat sailed! Tom sat in the warm sunshine, admiring the little boat that he had built. Suddenly a strong current caught the boat. Tom tried to pull it back to shore, but the string broke. The little boat raced downstream.

Tom ran along the sandy shore as fast as he could. But his little boat soon slipped out of sight. All afternoon he searched for the boat. Finally, when it was too dark to look any longer, Tom sadly went home.

A few days later, on the way home from school, Tom spotted a boat just like his in a store window. When he got closer, he could see — sure enough — it was his!

Tom hurried to the store manager: “Sir, that’s my boat in your window! I made it!”

“Sorry, son, but someone else brought it in this morning. If you want it, you’ll have to buy it for one dollar.”

Tom ran home and counted all his money. Exactly one dollar! When he reached the store, he rushed to the counter. “Here’s the money for my boat.” As he left the store, Tom hugged his boat and said, “Now you’re twice mine. First, I made you and now I bought you.”

Good News Publishers, Westchester, IL.

Your redeemer is the one who made you but your sin and the winds of this sinful world have blown you out of His hands. Your choices and the choices of others have whisked you right downstream into the darkest night you’ve ever known but that hasn’t put you beyond God’s reach. You’ve been captured in a net of circumstances and set aside to be sold to the highest bidder but that hasn’t taken away God’s power to help because He is your redeemer and HE has already paid the highest price for you. If you just stop trying to fix your life yourself and give it to Him He can fix the mess. As Herbert Cooper said “”God will take your mess and turn it into a message”

Oh what Good News!

Get Up and Glow Pt. 3

Sometimes in the midst of very great trials we are tempted to take the stance of Rabbi Kushner in His book , When Bad Things Happen To Good People.   We want to say “God is good but there are some things He just can’t fix because He isn’t all-powerful.”

While that may seem to be an easy answer it is not Scriptural so it is not one we can accept. In fact it is heresy. It is one of the reasons that the church today is losing its power and influence in the world. Loved these two quotes I found at

Episcopal priest Robert Capon said: “We are in a war between dullness and astonishment.” The most critical issue facing Christians is not abortion, pornography, the disintegration of the family, moral absolutes, MTV, drugs, racism, sexuality or school prayer. The critical issue today is dullness. We have lost our astonishment. The Good News is no longer good new, it is okay news. Christianity is no longer life changing, it is life enhancing, Jesus doesn’t change people into wild-eyed radicals anymore, He changes them into “nice people.” If Christianity is simply about being nice, I’m not interested. What happened to radical Christianity, the un-nice brand of Christianity that turned the world upside-down?

What happened to the kind of Christians who were filled with passion and gratitude, and who every day were unable to get over the grace of God? ~ Michael Yaconelli

What happened to them Mike? They bought the lie that God was no longer in charge of this world. Christians have bought the lie that the good news isn’t really good news. It’s just OK news.  Many have stopped fighting for the joy, peace and the freedom which is ours by right. We’ve contented ourselves with trying to control the behavior of others. We’ve  stopped fighting the battles of the Spirit. We’ve contented ourselves with making our lives more comfortable.  As J.S. Park says “we have let seasons of life determine our whole life.” We have let a season a situation turn us into someone we never wanted to be. Not realizing that our Redeemer has come we have given into our old sinful selves again and let the world system determine our mindsets. But I have news for you today Christian

“The Redeemer will come to Jerusalem to buy back those in Israel who have turned from their sins,” Isaiah 59:15,16,19,20
