The Twelve Ways of Fall

Just like there are twelve days of Christmas there are twelve ways of fall. Did you know that? Probably not because I just made it up on the drive to my computer! Dear reader here it is for the first time in print, “The Twelve Ways of Fall”.

“Oh the first way y’ know fall is here”, My true love said to me.

“The Canadian Geese start flying in a v”

“Oh the second way y’know fall is here,” My true love said to me “school bells start ringing and Canadian geese start flying in a v.”

“Oh the third way y’know fall is here.” My true love said to me

“trees change their colors, school bells start ringing, and Canadian geese start flying in a v.”

“Oh the fourth way y’know fall is here,” My true love said to me

“Gram makes her jelly, trees change their colors, school bells start ringing, and Canadian geese start flying in a v.”

“Oh the fifth way y’know fall is here,” My true love said to me

“WALMAAAAAART’S CHRISTMAAAAS  AISLE!!!!!!!”

“Gram makes her jelly, trees change colors, school bells start ringing, and Canadian geese start flying in a v.”

“Oh the sixth way y’know fall is here,” My true love said to me,

“Friends bring zucchini, WALAAART’S CHRISTMAAAS AISLE! Gram makes jelly, trees change colors, school bells start ringing, and Canadian geese start flying in a v.”“Oh the seventh way y’know fall is here,” My true love said to me

“people go to craft fairs, friends bring zucchini, WALMAAART’S CHRISTMAAAS AISLE! Gram makes jelly, trees change colors, school bells start to ring, and Canadian geese start flying in a v.” “Oh the eighth way y’know fall is here,” My true love said to me “pumpkins in the fields, people go to craft fairs, friends bring zucchini, WALAAART’S CHRISTMAAAS AISLE!  Gram makes jelly, trees change colors, school bells start to ring, and Canadian geese start flying in a v.”

“Oh the ninth way y’know fall is here,” My true love said to me ” morbid decorations, pumpkins in the fields, people go to craft fairs, friends bring zucchini, WALMAART’S CHRISTMAAAS AISLE, Gram makes jelly, trees change colors, school bells start to ring, and Canadian geese start flying in a v.”

“Oh the tenth way y’know fall is here,” My true love said to me

“people pick their apples, morbid decorations, pumpkins in the fields, people go to craft fairs, friends brings zucchini, WALMAAARTS CHRISTMAAAAS AISLE! Gram makes jelly, trees change color, school bells start to ring, and Canadian geese start flying in a v.”

“Oh the eleventh way y’know fall is here,” My true love said to me “acorns start to falling, people pick their apples, morbid decorations, pumpkins in the fields, people go to craft fairs, friends brings zucchini, WALMAAARTS CHRISTMAAAAS AISLE! Gram makes jelly, trees change color, school bells start to ring, and Canadian geese start flying in a v.”

“Oh the twelfth way y’know fall is here,” My true love said to me (big breath)  “Grampa starts his raking, acorns start to falling, people pick their apples, morbid decorations, pumpkins in the fields, people go to craft fairs, friends brings zucchini, WALMAAARTS CHRISTMAAAAS AISLE! Gram makes jelly, trees change color, school bells start to ring, and Canadian geese start flying in a v.”

I love the fall! What are some ways your family celebrates autumn?

  1. I enjoyed your fall song. It’s great!! I love fall so much, it’s like a beautiful gift that God sends us every year, with changing trees and windy days. I can’t wait to start making pies!

    • I can taste the pumpkin pie my wife will make already. In our household she makes the pies and I make the spaghetti sauce from the tomatoes! Thanks for checking in. My sauce recipe will be in a future post by the by.

  2. I absolutely love fall! And I love your post, too! Fall is undoubtedly my favorite time of the year. I wish it could last for 6 months instead of 3. If there is anywhere in the world where they have fall year round, I want to move there. Catchy tune! Good job!

    • Thank you for the kind comment. Fall is our favorite season. I can’t wait to take a drive into New Hampshire or Vermont for a look see at the mountains. They are beautiful this time of year.

  3. Congrats on being featured on Freshly Pressed! I was a little skeptical about the song at first, but I’m glad I kept reading because it really got funny by the end. My favorite was the Walmart Christmas Aisle, haha. Kudos & Happy Fall!

I’m in Florida, so our version of ‘Fall’ is the three weeks where it’s still warm but it becomes breezy and cool in the mornings. Then somehow, the weather jumps right into morbidly freezing conditions, and we’re all miserable. I’m headed to the Thomasville Farmers Market in Georgia this weekend to celebrate this small burst of seasonal bliss. 🙂

    • Thank you for the comment. Thank you also for the constructive criticism. It helps. Fall is a great season up here in Massachusetts but it is followed by our blistering winters. Some years I would take the morbidly freezing Florida winter. Although last year I don’t think you folks were any better off than us.

  4. I really like this post! I love autumn too-my friends have to keep me away from piles of leaves cos I run into them like a child! That has to be my favourite thing. And my birthday 😉

  6. Oh lordy! You are hilarious!!!!!! Thanks for the giggle and also for probably getting that tune stuck in my head all weekend. I better start decorating for Halloween and playing Thriller or something to get it out of my noggin!

  7. Very impressive song. Good in itself, but such a clever idea in the first place.
Perhaps every family should create its own customized 12 days songs for their own special times. It could be a good way to pass a long car journey.
(Woohoo, I feel slightly clever now myself, having surfed along on the back of your cleverness.)

  8. I find there are good things about all of the seasons. I think Spring might be my favorite, if I had to pick. We are big fans of leaf piles here too. The 4 year-old gives me a good excuse to play in them.
Our garden didn’t do as well as we were hoping, but we did come by enough tomatoes from a friend to put up a dozen quarts of tomato sauce. I still have a box of apples to do this weekend.
Your little diddy about Fall made me think about all of the things I enjoy about this season. The line about WalMart was funny, and yet scary! It isn’t even October and they are ramping up for Christmas. UGH!
Thanks for sharing & congrats on being “Freshly Pressed!” Mmmm. That makes me think of the apple cider the neighbors used to make when I was a kid.

  9. Love the pix, love the song, I heart fall!! This is true in spite of the allergies and this cold I developed last night. Spent most of my week making apple…everything! Apple crisp, apple cake, apple brownies, apple french toast – you get the drift. One of my family favorites is route 80 through upper PA in October to see the tree covered mountains in all their orange, red and yellow majesty! A beautiful masterpiece of natural artistry! Congrats on the FP.

    • Thanks for the word of encouragement and for stopping by “Reinventing the We’ll”! I have never had an apple brownie can you share the recipe on your blog? That would be awesome

  10. I loooove this post!! I am not a huge fan of the fall because I dread the long, cold, dark winter that follows. This year, though, I am trying to focus on the things I enjoy about fall and this post really reiterated that! Thank you for sharing!!

  11. Haha, this made me laugh, but I gave up singing it after a the first few reasons. I love fall, it’s my favorite season. Loved your pictures, too. 😀 Congrats on getting Freshly Pressed! And happy second day of fall!

  12. I LOVE fall, there is beauty all around us from the trees to the sky to the smells to the colors…its just the perfect time of year! It’s not too cold, still some warm days thrown in there…pumpkins, changing leaves, uhh i wish i would stay fall forever 🙂

    ….Also, fall fashion is amazing!

    • Agreed Annie! Though as a New Englander I imagine if even fall stayed around too long I would get sick of it. I hate change but cry if it doesn’t come. I am sadly a study in contradiction. Thankfully God is changing me! Thanks for stopping by! 🙂

  13. Thanks for a lovely post. For a Northern Hemisphere girl living in the Southern Hemisphere this made me so nostalgic for those lovely Autumn days with crisp leaves under your feet. I shall keep singing your lovely song to remind me! God Bless

  14. Hello Jelillie:

I just read your Autumn Song and I loved it. The words and the photographs were gorgeous. It comes like a ring on a finger with the upcoming fall. Thank you.

We don’t have an Autumn Season where I live in Panama.

    Omar.-
    Panama, Central America

    • I am sorry there is no autumn in Panama Omar. I hope sometime you have the opportunity to visit New England in the fall it is something to behold! Thanks for stopping in!

    • I know what you mean we have had to work hard and spend a lot on electricity to keep our home at acceptable levels this summer. My wife is awaiting winter with excitement!

  15. That was so funny!!! I was laughing out loud whilst reading your post. And I have to say- the Halloween witch who has slammed into a tree is the best Halloween decoration I have ever seen….lol!!!

  17. Everything has its positive and negative sides. It is up to us to benefit from positives of a thing and claim it as a good thing so you have done with fall. It’s name fall shows that it is not going to be good at all. But it is only the matter of thinking as you have done. A thing could be good or bad either by your thought not in itself. May God bless you and enlighten your positive thoughts.

    • Interesting thoughts here. I often wonder where the term “fall” comes from. Autumn is a much prettuer word don’t you think? But “The Twelve Ways of Autumn” Just didn’t have the same ring to me. As to the seasons being positive or negative I guess they are what you make them. In that sense you are right. I am not sure we can say the same of everything. I believe that “God works all things together for good to those who love Him and are called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28 but that doesn’t mean every situation is necessarily good. I know of plenty of bad situations which God has brought good out of. I am not sure that makes the situation any better.

  20. GREAT post! Can I like it about five times??

I live in Orlando FL now, but I grew up in the Washington DC area, and I really miss a lot about northeastern fall: leaf change, cooler temperatures, etc.

But, when I do my exercises in the evening here, I can still jump in our ourdoor pool (like I did last night) and swim some laps, and ya can’t quite do that at this time of year in Washington. Oh well.

If you’d like to drop by, my blog is: http://tangotangoromeo.wordpress.com/
I also have a photography blog at: http://tlhphotoblog.wordpress.com

    God bless you!

    • Thanks for the comment. I am already missing summer a little. We had great beach weather! I love the beach too but I guess everything in its season. OH YEAH! That was my point! Still I do miss swimming.

  21. How cool was that. It was pretty catchy. With all the comments it’s probably catching on like wild fire. Of course some people probably think you have too much time on your hands but, it’s all good. It works for me.

    • Actually I am glad to be replying to all the comments. I feel like I am making new friends all over the world. Thank you for stopping by. I hope you will pop in again soon!

  22. This is my families favorite time of the year. My son and I laughed our heads off trying to sing your song. Thanks for the laughs. I’m always looking for creative ways to connect with my kids.

  23. I love fall, and I’m very excited for it to come. I just love the colours of the trees, and the cool air, and the Halloween decorations. I also really love Thanksgiving, which here in Canada, is coming this October! Very excited. 🙂 I love Thanksgiving. The smells of turkey, how it gets all warm inside from all the cooking the windows start to fog up, watching the thanksgiving parades on TV, taking little naps throughout the day, reading a good book. It’s all so relaxing and wonderful. 🙂 Great song by the way. 😉

    • Christopher,
Thanks so much for the comment. Thanksgiving here in the U.S. is my favorite holiday for all the reasons you put down. What an awesome restful holiday based around the idea of thanking God for all our blessings! What could be better.

  24. The title caught my eye, thank you for a wonderful smile and a feeling of joy inside. I am from Ohio now living in Southern Florida and I MISS FALL, so I am keeping this on my wall at work. Again thank you. I will now be reading this blog on a daily basis.

  25. I love autumn too! Living in Alabama I enjoy all the seasons, but autumn is my favorite. A few of the reasons are what you mentioned, fall foliage, apple pickin’, cooler weather, football games, chili suppers and… I remember I fell in love in the fall.

  26. Very creative! 3 months to Christmas … I think I like this version better so we’ll sing yours then 🙂

    Congrats on being Freshly Pressed!

I go now … I hear the rake calling me 🙂

    blessings,
    ann

  29. Fall is by far my favorite season, and I am in the midst of planning a fall themed weekend with my friends over Columbus Day weekend- get out of the city, see the glory that is autumn, the whole shebang. ANYWHO, I’m sending this link to them so we can A) sing it on the car ride and B) do everything the song mentions.
